Josh’s practice examines the idea of psychotic automatism. Developing from surrealist automatism, his paintings are sites of confrontation with the irrational, with the intrusive, and with that which resists understanding. Drawing on his experience of psychosis, he approaches painting as a behaviour rather than medium: a sustained, repetitive act of reality testing through which intrusive, involuntary phenomena are translated, externalised, and held. In Lacanian terms, he identifies painting as his sinthome, a structural knot that provides a degree of agency within his psychic life.
