Learning Outcome 1:
Develop and realise a self-directed programme of learning which draws from wide-ranging subject knowledge.

(AC Knowledge, AC Process)

Throughout Unit 2, I have developed a routine based practice that allows me to develop and experiment with ways that I can communicate my psychosis through painting and mixed media works.

Experimentation can be shown in a few examples, but specifically the adaptation of automatic text and writing, and how the implementation of paint can juxtapose context.

a gift - my initial introduction to a type-writer, which i used to experiment with writing in a way that felt easier to translate unconscious thoughts and/or desires.

typewriting development paintings - my first experiments with painting on top of automatic writing from writing sessions

typewriter development 2 - the machine - a documented continuation of this line of development

the posts shown below outline the development of automatic writing in different ways, such as writing with ink or attempting to write with oil paint

more automatic writing development - ‘oil paint writing’

these posts some show form of development into automatic writing, although it being not the primary focus

while also working on ways that i can adapt my paintings through experimenting with mixed media text, i have also developed my pre-existing practice of painting, experimenting with my approach to paintings from technique, surface and medium.

i’d like to also highlight a video commission that i completed over the summer, which although it doesn’t relate a lot to my paintings by aesthetic, it’s been nice to reflect on how other forms of artistic expression can influence my practice.

Learning Outcome 2:
Articulate a thorough understanding of your research and establish an informed critical position.

(AC Communication)

In Unit 2 I completed my research paper about the purpose Psychosis has in Surrealism, this paper not only informed me on a great amount of research and information that I most likely wouldn’t of discovered if it wasn’t for this paper, but it had a direct impact on how I perceived my practice.

unit 2: research paper - My completed research paper.

Below are blog posts that uncover additional research - largely inspired by my paper - that had a great deal in informing my practice.

Learning Outcome 3:
Analyse and critically reflect on your practice and its context.

(AC Enquiry)

Unit 2 has contained a great amount of reflection, not only on the current position of my art practice, but how I am mentally and physically. For myself to see the beauty in psychosis, I must act in a way that makes my practice sustainable, practical, and cathartic. This year has not only included pivotal development for my paintings and experiments into automatic writing, but development in my mental and physical health.

That’s not to hide from the fact that there have been struggles. This year has involved a great deal of reflective thinking in ways that I feel my work is suffocating, especially in regards to this hindrance of making that comes from my confidence.

Below are blog posts that outline this progressive reflection throughout the growth of my practice, and the research that helps inform my practice.
